Oral Myofunctional Therapy for Speech
Oral Myofunctional Therapy is a practical, oral muscle exercise program designed to strengthen your tongue, lips, and cheeks, and to correct negative oral habits. Think of it like physio to strengthen a muscle that is not working as well as it could.
If your child has a lisp, if their tongue is visible while talking, or holds their lips and tongue differently from sucking on their thumb/dummy/blankie for a long time, then this program can help bring clarity to their speech.
As a speech therapist, my goal is to improve communication and ensure a safe swallow. Oral Myofunctional Therapy does this by:
- Strengthening and toning the lips, tongue, and cheeks.
- Promoting the correct tongue position during times of rest.
- Nasal breathing with an effective lip seal during the day and night.
- Correcting oral habits caused by prolonged thumb sucking or dummy use.
- Correct any unsafe swallowing patterns by establishing the correct oral environment
Added benefits of Oral Myofunctional Therapy include:
- Better quality of sleep.
- Reduction of snoring/loud sleeping.
- Creating a healthy airway.
- Orthodontic corrections (for mild issues).
- Reduction or elimination of pain in the jaw (TMJ).
- Reduction or elimination of teeth grinding during sleep.
The results you see is connected to the amount of effort you put in between sessions.
Habits cannot be changed with one 30-minute session per week, but with daily practice and focus.
